Politics: Tuesday, September 02, 2003

Arthur Hu - Lake Washington School District Pos. 1

Arthur Hu Arthur Hu

Age: 45

Residence: Kirkland

Occupation: Software engineer

Education: M.S., computer science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Community/political experience: Candidate for state superintendent of public instruction, 2000; columnist and writer on education and diversity; community volunteer

Endorsements: No organizations listed

Campaign Web site: www.electhu.org

Questions:

1. List the top three priorities of the position you seek and how you will go about addressing them.
Put the focus back on teaching instead of reform; put the joy back in and take the stress out. Replace experimental, no-arithmetic, new math and whole language with traditional homework that kids and parents can understand. Drop excessive graduation requirements, including WASL and senior project

2. Why should people vote for you?
We need a change from think-alike proponents of buzzword-based education inflicted on parents and students. We need an independent thinker who will debate and lead, not just follow. I will ask the tough questions and stand for the people, not the bureaucracy.
